Operational Excellence, Improvement, and Innovation

Operational Excellence, Improvement, and Innovation

Will AI Transform the Factory Floor?

Want a business case approved? Just say you are implementing GenAI. Process optimization has remained focused on leveraging classic improvement methods supported by process mining and RPA. GenAI is all the hype right now, but practical implementation for process optimization remains low. However, AI may be at an inflection point, as several global executives share how AI is transforming the factory floor. I'm becoming increasingly bullish on using GenAI as a process optimization tool for digital processes (especially administrative and low-risk decision-making processes) as the technology is rapidly improving.

GE Aerospace is Taking Off From the Flightdeck

CEO Larry Culp announced GE Aerospace's Q3 results, featuring increases in revenue and profit. Culp specifically highlights the use of FLIGHTDECK, GE's Lean Operating System, and an increase in internal shop visits, reminding us again why Lean and improvement culture needs to be led by the CEO.

The Unlearning is the Hardest Part

Jacob Stoller, Shingo-Prize winning author of Productivity Reimagined: Shattering Performance Myths to Achieve Sustainable Growth offers up a reminder that lean thinking requires a fundamental shift in assumptions and beliefs. Learning the tools is easy, but the unlearning is the hardest part.

Creating a Culture of Improvement

This is Strategy

The inimitable Seth Godin challenges us to modernize our approaches to strategy and business plans with his latest compendium of pithy advice, This is Strategy: Making Better Plans

Haven't got time to read a book? Check out Seth's blog post The Strategy Questions for 500 questions for strategists. Seth was also a recent guest on Coaching for Leaders: Crafting the Modern Business Plan. I highly recommend giving it a listen!

Boeing CEO says they “need a fundamental shift in culture”

Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg's message to employees on Q3 results serves as a stark reality that Boeing faces to rebuild from a long and regrettable period of focusing on delivery at all costs. Ortberg plainly acknowledges the gravity of the current state and stresses the need to focus on culture and stability, a departure from the previous administration's focus on finance-speak. Here's hoping this big ship can turn around under Ortberg's leadership.

There is No Leadership Without Risk

Are leaders playing too safe? Leaders today often play defense or walk on eggshells for fear of being too bold. Perhaps its time to reward more fearless leadership.

The Future of Corporate Learning

Corporate learning remains stubbornly unchanged in many large organizations, though many Learning and Development functions have shifted their focus to curating content and training rather than developing their own content when there is an abundance of vastly superior options and MOOCs. But there remains little point in grinding employees through PowerPoints only to see no shift in behaviour. The future of corporate learning requires immersive learning experiences

18 Life Lessons

I find it important to explore other genres and learn from many different disciplines when developing my skills and thinking. I've been following the Marginalian (previously known as Brain Pickings) by Maria Popova for over 12 years. She writes beautifully and shares deeply on books and topics that have enriched my development and thinking, far outside the traditional management and engineering fodder I typically gravitate towards. Maria shares 18 Life-Learnings from 18 years of The Marginalian.
